The address of His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, at the consecration of the Altar of the National Cathedral in Bucharest brings into question the fact that this event fulfils the desire of the Romanian society expressed after obtaining the national independence (1877-1878). Thus, one hundred years after the fulfilment of the dream of unity, the National Cathedral is and must be a national binder, a symbol of spiritual values that have held together over the centuries this people hard tried by the waves of its two-thousand-year history.

In this sermon, the theme of wealth is debated in a Christian and balanced perspective. The riches of honest work are a blessing upon man, as it descended upon Abraham, Jacob, Job, Solomon, who, not clinging to earthly things, realized that they were only the stewards of what was given to them. Thus, almsgiving is the important characteristic that makes the difference between the passion of enrichment and the Christian experience.

The Orthodox Church has kept the primary tradition uninterrupted and the faith unaltered. The Church did not feel the internal need for new formulations at any cost, for her faith, the elaboration of the Confessions of Faith was done for external, practical reasons, due to the contacts with the heterodox and the challenges of the heretics. Thus, the Confessions of Faith in the post-Byzantine era are the result of the need to answer all the problems raised by the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation.

In the Pauline addresses we see that Paul’s apostolate and the work of proclaiming the Gospel are directly related to the person of the Father. Placing the pastoral-missionary mission of the Church under the leadership of the Father shows us that the teaching and preaching work of the institutional Church authority (bishop, priest, deacon) does not spring from itself, does not exhaust itself in pastoral and missionary tact acquired, in preparation or formation, but keeps absolutely by the will and work of the Father.

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul has a special importance in the cultural and religious landscape of Târgu-Jiu, due both to its location on the route of the Way of the Heroes and to the fact that it is dedicated to the nation’s heroes, as is the entire Brancusi ensemble, in which it seems to be included (in fact, for a long time, the church was also called the „Church of Heroes”). The present study is an update of the history of this place of worship, using various data presented over time in specialized works, information from archive documents, as well as personal testimonies.

The respective texts, which were not bypassed by the communist censorship, must be seen in the historical-political context in which they were written, their central message being clear: the Romanian Orthodox Church had a decisive role in creating the unitary state Romania, on December 1, 1918.

Valuing the teaching of faith of the Holy Fathers regarding the act of creation and salvation of man, Father Dumitru Stăniloae offers us one of the most generous theological perspectives on the condition of the human being. Deepening the patristic content, he brings it to contemporaneity, highlighting the permanence of the theological message in relation to the tendencies of the last centuries to validate the insignificant in front of transcendence and perishability in front of eternity.

The presence of priests among the fighting units, especially after the retreat from December 1916, contributed decisively to maintaining the morale of the soldiers and the faith in victory. The mobilized priests did their duty, not only as part of the medical teams, caring for the wounded and conducting funeral services, or in combating the great typhus epidemic in the spring of 1917, but also by accompanying the combat units in the front lines.
