The year 2018 was declared by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church The Homage Year of the Unity of Faith and Nation and the Commemorative Year of the Makers of the Great Union of 1918. In this article, Patriarch Daniel emphasizes the role that the Romanian Orthodox Church has played in promoting the awareness of the identity and spiritual unity of the Romanian people, especially through its cultural activity. The commemoration of the makers of the Great Union and their major historical contribution to the fulfilment of the national ideal of unity is an offering of gratitude, but also an opportunity for the current generation to better know their virtues, to appreciate them and put them to work.

The first Sunday of Lent is dedicated to the victory of the Orthodox faith over heresies. The Holy Fathers who met in the Ecumenical Councils between the 4th and 8th centuries established the right teaching about the deity of the Son and the Holy Spirit, as well as the true veneration of the holy icons. The pastoral letter composed by the bishops from the synod is read in every church in the Romanian Patriarchate.

Given the causes and problems that threaten the family’s survival in this high-speed century, these questions arise: Are there concrete solutions to these problems or at least some of them? What attitude should the Church clergymen and laymen have toward these negative situations and how can they get involved beneficially? This article draws attention to the attacks to which the Christian family is subjected in contemporary society and proposes various pastoral solutions, such as: catechesis, pastoral visits, counselling, and the development of social assistance at the parish level.

A profound theologian, Newman sought to reform the Anglican Church both from within, by basing Anglican doctrine on the works of the Holy Fathers from the early Christian centuries, and at the level of manifestation in worship, by moving away from the Protestant forms it had increasingly approached in the last century. Converted to Catholicism, he was named cardinal, and in 2010 was declared „beatus” by the Catholic Church. Through his virulent attitude toward the devoid forms of spiritual life of the West, Newman becomes a bridge through which Orthodox theology can present itself in the ecumenical meetings of the future.

Based on a diachronic foray into the doctrines of the Holy Fathers from the apostolic and apologetic period, from St. Clement the Roman to St. Irenaeus of Lyons, the author notes the lack of a unitary and coherent vision of Christian teaching about the resurrection of the dead in the first three centuries. Most authors have had to approach this eschatological theme both as a present event and as a future reality, having as a connecting element the change that the resurrection produces in human nature.

Of all the biblical episodes, in Mark’s writing, the Transfiguration of the Lord seems to be one of the most coherent and consistent theological discourses about the Resurrection of the Son of God. This exegetical article captures in this episode the fact that the revelation of the divinity of Jesus Christ and the fulfilment of the prophecies and the Old Law in Him essentially means the victory over death. At the same time, it emphasizes the historical reality of the hesychast tradition that claims its source from this event of the revealing of divine light.

Saint Simeon the New Theologian proposes a charismatic theology of God’s spiritual experience, against a scientific, abstract, purely intellectual theology that, in his vision, undermines the charismatic and evangelical realism of Revelation, glory and Trinity light discovered and accessible to all believers of the Church, as the living example of the saints shows. This article presents, starting from the texts of the great theologian, an authentic way of doing theology, which is based on humility and repentance and which has as a starting point an authentic spiritual effort.

The Church of St. Nicholas in Câmpina is known to many both through the beauty of the settlement, and by the zeal and effort put into raising it by the faithful in the parish, under the leadership of Father Parson Petru Moga. The article describes the iconographic ensemble of this church created by the master Grigorie Popescu-Muscel, who managed in an admirable way to bring Byzantine and so-called post-Byzantine painting to the present day.

In this presentation, His Holiness Varlaam, Vicar bishop, emphasizes that the year 1918 represents the victorious crowning of a long series of expectations and struggles, sacrifices and efforts to fulfil a creed, an ideal – the perfection of the unitary national state. This incessant work began with the process of our ethnogenesis or formation as a new people in history two millennia ago and was accomplished by the Orthodox Church, the Church of our nation. Also, His Holiness Varlaam Ploieşteanul reinforced the idea that among the leaders of the struggle for the Great Union were hierarchs, priests, theology teachers, monks, sons of priests, personalities with theological studies, both in Bessarabia and in Bucovina, in Transylvania and Banat, which will be evoked throughout the year and in the following years dedicated to the Centenary.
